Westminster Abbey 1898 The Royal Maundy Ceremony April 7th. Yeoman of the Guard carrying the dish containing alms In this ceremony at Westminster Abbey, which goes back at least to the 12th century, the monarch gives a specially minted coin to a group of pensioners on the Thursday before Easter.
