Designed for Ron Arad (British, b.1951)
Pencil, felt-tip pen, and crayon over photocopies
1985-6
"My way of working is to turn everything upside down and
not to be in good taste" was Arad's description of his design
methodology when applied to the clothes shop, Bazar. It
was situationed in South Molton Street, London, a prime
location for shops selling top of the range designer clothes.
The walls of the shop are of fractured concrete, the fittings
of sand blasted cast iron, and raw timber. The rails of
clothes are supported by casts of human figures. These
were cast in an old transformer and provide a deliberately
Pompeian echo.
The character of the interior is accurately expressed
through the inventive use of over layed sheets of
photocopies, scratched through and coloured.
Appropriately for the transient world of high fashion Arad's
interior lasted only eighteen months before being
superceded.
