Wallpaper

19th century

Rex Whistler (1905-1944) painted the panel (P.13-1977) to replace a missing section of a chinoiserie wallpaper bought by Mr Samuel Courtauld at Bath. The empty frame was designed to contain Picasso's picture L'enfant au Pigeon. This is a strip of the original 19th-century chinoiserie wallpaper (P.13A-1977).

Whistler was a noted painter of murals, as well as a book-illustrator and stage-designer. Perhaps his best known murals are those in the restaurant of Tate Britain.
