Object history | This dress is nearly identical to an earlier design in the volume of designs for Winter 1897 called 'Marquise'. (see E.26-1957). The only difference is that the arrangement of the black and white insertion on the skirt curves round to the back of the skirt in this design, rather than straight down and terminating, as in the 'Marquise' sketch. Comparing these two designs is an instructive example of how the couturier was prepared to modify and alter her designs, offering alternative reworkings and rearrangements to provide her clients with gowns that were unique, rather than preparing identical gowns. - Daniel Milford-Cottam (February 2012) |
