Object history
This coat, which appears to be designed for sporting or motoring purposes, was presumably named "Gordon Bennett" after James Gordon Bennett Jr. (1841-1918), called Gordon Bennett to distinguish him from his father. He was the publisher of the New York Herald, and a sports and motoring enthusiast who sponsored a early motor-racing trophy. the Gordon Bennett Cup, in the early 1900s, along with other trophies, including the Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett, a hot-air-ballooning race which still continues today.
