Object history
This costume design by Oliver Messel was donated to the museum in 2000. The design was executed for a highly successful production of Mozart's opera "Le Nozze di Figaro", which opened at Glyndebourne Festival Opera in June 1955. The production was directed by Carl Ebert and conducted by Victorio Gui. The cast included Sena Jurinac as Countess Almaviva.

Historical significance: A fine example of an "18th century" style costume design by Oliver Messel. This design had been presented by Messel to David Harvey-Jones, a highly skilled tailor who worked on the 1955 production of "Le Nozze di Figaro" at Glyndebourne. Harvey-Jones later became a tutor in the cut and construction of costume at the Mabel Fletcher College in Liverpool.
