CHAIR
DUTCH; about 1725
Walnut, the upholstery modern. The front seat-rails were originally concave but have more recently been made serpentine.
Chairs with backs of this general form were fashionable in Holland from about 1715-1740; the carved battens are in the style popularised by Daniel Marot.

Object history | Given by Brigadier W.E. Clark, through the National Art-Collections Fund (Registered Papers for acquisition 66/1504). No earlier history is recorded. At the time of the donation, Peter Thornton suggested that these chairs were Dutch rather than English and noted that the front rails had been made more curvilinear by the addition of a later section of wood to the centre of the rail. |
