Gallery 100, ‘History of photography’, 2011-2012, label text : Sir Benjamin Stone (1836-1914) ‘Coronation Cups presented by the King to his Guests the Poor of London (Coronation dinner)’ 1902 In 1897, Queen Victoria’s Jubilee year, Sir Benjamin Stone announced the formation of the National Photographic Record Association. Its aim was to record the ancient buildings, customs and other ‘survivals’ of historical interest. The result would be a national memory bank that would foster ‘a national pride in the historical associations of the country, or neighbourhood, [and] in family traditions’.
