Sideboard, mahogany with carved compositions, England, 1810-1820 (RF: 88/543)
Physical description
Side board of mahogany with carved wooden, metal and composition enrichments. The base, which is indented by a segment of a circle, the edge gadrooned, supports a pair of wooden bronzed winged lionesses, and pilasters at the rear. The frieze is decorated at the front and sides by metal palmettes flanked by tendrils, the centre of the front has a pair of composition lionesses drinking at a fluted basin. Below this is a bronzed carved wooden apron composed with rosettes, trumpet flowers, acanthus and tendrils centring on a formalized shell.
The back-rail of the sideboard is composed with three wooden bronzed eagle-headed lyres, with metal strings, lictor's roods and pineapple and vine headed batons, with a rosette at their crossing. All these motifs are of bronzed wood.
