Scamell captured the adventure of early motor racing for the National Photographic Record Association, which aimed to systematically document British places and customs. Since road racing was banned in Britain, the trials to select the British competitors for the Gordon Bennett Cup (an international competition that was superseded in 1906 by the first Grand Prix) were held on the Isle of Man. Scamell noted that car number seven, a Wolseley driven by Cecil Bianchi, was travelling at about fifty miles per hour as it crossed Snaefell Bridge.
