Trial sample for a rag rug using specially dyed cottons on a jute warp. The cottons run through a rainbow spectrum from orange, through reds, pinks, dark to pale blues to purple. Loose warp threads form a fringe at both ends.

Historical significance: John Hinchcliffe secured a niche in the 1970s for weaving rag rugs to commission. This may be a trial for a large example commissioned by the V&A (T.161-1978).
