Object history | On the 10th January 1824 Flaxman billed Rundell, Bridge and Rundell for one drawing of Jupiter and the Giants for 5 pounds and 5 shillings and three explanatory drawings for 3 pounds and 2 shillings. There is no surviving centrepiece to this design. It was one of a group of 7 centrepieces showing classical figures billed on the same date. For the centrepiece of Diana and the Nymphs see CAI.968. Other drawings for the Jupiter centrepiece are in the Victoria and Albert Museum (CAI.968) and a tracing after Flaxman, but omitting the base, is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art inscribed "Jupiter and Giants N.1" which shows the same composition as in this sketch (23.68 leaf 27 H). Bequeathed by C. A. Ionides, 1900. |
