Drawing by Eileen Mayo of Serge Lifar in George Balanchine's ballet Apollon Musagetes, as performed by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, 1928. The ballet was later simply called Apollo. The balet in two scenes to music by Igor Stravinsky and choreographed byGeorge Balancine was first performed at the theatre Sarah-Bernhardt on 12 June 1928 and seen the following month in London. The costumes were by Andre Bauchant.

Eileen Mayo produced the illustrations for Cyril Beaumont's monograph on Serge Lifar which included an image of Lifar in his first costume. This red and gold costume was worn for the second scene.

Physical description
Full-length stylised figure, the head turned in profile to the left, with left hand bent across body and right hand bent and raised, wearing short pleated Greek tunic belted at the waist with a triangular belt set with gold squares, and short stylised cloak highlighted in red pink pastel from left shoulder. The lips are tinted red, the sleeked back hair is detailed in gold paint and the figure is standing on a gold floor. Signed and titled. Pencil, pastel, gouache and gold paint on paper.
