Object history
This design is a sketch for the back of a candelabrum showing the Serpent Laden being fed by the three daughters of Erebus and Night. A candelabrum of this type with lioness supporters on the base was marked by Philip Rundell and hallmarked 1821-22 (Goldsmiths’ Company Collection). The same stem and figures, marked by Paul Storr and hallmarked in 1816-17, were added to a pre existing base converted from a dessert stand and hallmarked 1809-10, forming a large candelabrum in the Royal Collection (RCIN 51977). This forms a pair in the Royal Collection with a candelabrum showing Mercury presenting the infant Bacchus to the nymphs of Nysa, also designed by Flaxman. For other designs of this candelabrum see 100(front), 101 (front) and 102 (back). Other Flaxman designs for this candelabrum are in the Royal Collection (RCIN 931291) and in the National Gallery of Art Washington (1980.45.1615). Copies by Edward Hodges Baily of two Flaxman's designs for this candelabrum are in the British Museum (1913-3-31, 297). Designs number 100-103 were bought in 1857.
