Object history
This design appears to be a loose variant on an idea by Thomas Stothard for which Baily did another more closely derived design (E.111-1964). The Stothard designs are 9241.8-9 and Dyce 882.
For a discussion of this candelabrum and the derivation of its elements from prints of Jean Lepautre (1618-1682) see S. Lambert ed, Pattern and Design; Designs for the Decorative Arts 1480-1980, 1983, pages 78-83.
A candelabrum with a similar base and dancing figures was marked by D. and C. Reid (Newcastle) and hallmarked 1826-7 (Christies 24th June 1981, lot 14).
Acquired in 1857 as by Catton. The accession register is inscribed "Noted for Storr and Mortimer", which probably records the cut faint inscription on the mount.
