Object history
This is a preliminary design for a candelabrum presented by the County of Hertfordshire to the Marquis of Salisbury in 1821 and made in the workshop of Rundell, Bridge & Rundell (Hatfield House). The deer are the supporters of the arms of Hertfordshire. A design for a cistern (8410.24) evidently for the same commission is probably by the same hand as this drawing.
The made candelabrum differs in some of the details, notably the addition of a figure of Hospitality and a very much taller central stem. A drawing of the made version, by Edward Hodges Baily, is in the British Museum (1913-3-31-294).
An entry in John Flaxman's account book, dated 3rd December 1820, refers to 'A group of Peace and Justice for the County of Hertford' (Columbia University, New York).
A design for a candelabrum by Charles Robert Cockerell with the arms and supporters of the Marquis. the arms and supporters of the County of Hertfordshire and two standing figures of Peace and Plenty, dated 15th December 1820, may be related to the same commission (RIBA Collection SC87/14[1] ). It appears to be a tracing of a more finished drawing in the Ashmolean Museum, attributed to Stothard, but most probably by Cockerell. Another design of a candelabrum related to this commission, by an anonymous hand, is in the Cortauld Institute Collection, showing a figure of Plenty and two others. It may however be by Cockerell.
This drawing is by the same hand as 107 and 112, and possibly 8410-24.
The dates and life histories of Charles Catton senior and Charles Catton Junior make the authorship of these drawings impossible.
Bought with 5 others for 15 shillings on the 29th October 1859. on acquisition they were described as being by 'Catton'.
