| Object history | A design for a volute krater with an ovoid body, the handles rising from swans' heads, on the side a dancing male figure holding a vase. The base decorated with a thyrsus, on winged demi-lion feet. Shown in profile, less than full size. This design contains decorative elements of classical inspiration that Jean Jacques Boileau often combines in designs for silver. This and the other drawings by J. J. Boileau and his school were probably in the collection of A. C. Pugin and sold at Mr Wheatley’s rooms,4th June 1843, lot 469, Boileau’s (J.) “Series of drawings appropriated to the gold and silversmiths”, bought by Williams for 3 shillings. Bought from the dealer Robert Jackson 9th July 1874 for 3 shillings and 6 pence. |
