Italian draughtsman Section and elevation of the cloister of the monastery of S. Ambrogio, Milan. Late seventeenth century Pen and ink and wash Although the orthagonal elevation (or head-on side view) and section had been devised by the thirteenth century, the use of these techniques for showing buildings greatly increased from the fifteenth century. This drawing, which combines both ideas, is an old copy of an early sixteenth- century drawing. The cloisters at S. Ambrogio, built from 1492, were designed by Donato Bramante, one of the great masters of the classical revival in Renaissance architecture. 620 (Given by F.W. Moody in 1872)
