Object history
Canova arrived in London to inspect the Elgin Marbles in November 1815. Benjamin Robert Haydon, who had championed the acquisition of the Marbles, called on Canova and invited him to his studio. William Bewick came to London from Darlington in 1816 and became a pupil of Haydon. There is no evidence that Bewick met Canova in England. Perhaps this work is his version of one of Haydon's drawings. Sir Thomas Lawrence made an oil portrait of Canova in 1815, and as Bewick was associated with Lawrence later on, it may instead be a version of one of Lawrence's drawings. Bewick had the reputation of being an excellent copyist.
