Physical description

Blue and white roundel design for tiles. A fortress is depicted atop a lofty, steep-sided butte which dominates the composition. At the foot of the butte runs a buttressed structure – possibly a defensive wall. In the far left middle ground, a small cluster of medieval buildings gives way to open land which stretches beyond. Mountains loom in the distance against a cloudy sky, while trees rise in the immediate foreground. A blue border encloses the composition. Signed with artist’s monogram and dated.

Judging from the Seventeenth Report of the Science and Art Department, the Grill Room's dado tiles were all installed by the end of 1869 at the latest.
