Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543), copy after, Design for the scabbard, hilt and pommel of a dagger, copied either from an original design by Holbein whicg was in the collection of the Earl of Arundel in 1645, or from the two etchings made after it in that year by W Hollar. On two sheets joined. Probably Italian, 18th century. Note: For impressions of the etchings by Hollar see museum numbers 27382.1,2. These show slight variations from the design show in 1543 (notably in the addition of mounts and the greater refinement of details), but the heads of the three subsidiary knives inserted in the front of the scabbard are presented by Hollar as purely decorative detail, whereas in the drawing they are shown in the round, as it the artist was conscious that they were intended to be functional. |
