Count Moriz von Fries; Sir T. Lawrence (Lugt 2445); S. Woodburn (sale, Christie, 4-14 June 1860, probably lot 995, as by Perino del Vaga; bought for the Museum) Lot 995 in the Woodburn sale catalogue is described thus: 'a beautiful design for a casket - in pen and bistre, heightened with white, on tinted paper. Very delicately finished. From the collection of the Count de Fries.' The mark of von Fries is not stamped on the paper. The drawing was formerly ascribed to Perino, as in the Woodburn catalogue; but the handling is perhaps more typical of Salviati. Compare a design of a casket in a similar style in the Uffizi (no. 1577E; photo Gernsheim 10671).
