Object history | The scene can be identified as the 'Five Cassias of Yanshan'. Yanshan is Dou Yudiao, a figure of the Five Dynasties period who educated his five sons to such good effect that they all rose to high office. The sons are the 'five cassias', also sometimes the 'five dragons'. Here they approach their father on horseback, servants carrying their insignia of office. The inscription on the screen behind Dou Yudiao makes the allusion clear. Dou Yudiao has a biography in "Song shi", juan 349, but the story is a popular one, mentioned in the "Three-character Classic". |
