This reliquary probably belonged to one of the many thousands of Japanese who were converted to Christianity. The front depicts The Crucifixion, while the back shows the Virgin Mary. When Christianity was banned in the early 1600s, Japanese believers were forced to renounce their faith or be executed. The few who survived and remained faithful practised in secret.

Purchased from M. Blumberg (Lisbon), accessioned in 1866. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
