Object history
Historical significance: The acquisition of three stacking bottleracks (W.3, 4, 5-1997) is intended to broaden V&A's representation of Morrison's work by including a different object type designed for a mass market. The bottleracks are examples of Morrison's designs being made more cheaply on a larger scale. Nevertheless they retain the same attention to detail and the distinctive styling of his more expensive products. The racks are designed to stack, which has influenced the decision to acquire a group of three. Furthermore, a stack will have mre presence in displays, and reiterates the fact that the design is intended as a mass-produced multiple.
Historical context
Jasper Morrison's rational, spare and elegant desings have made him one of the most influential furniture designers of his generation. His work has been emulated by designers throughout Europe and his designs are manufactured by leading international companies.
Magis is a typical Italian producer of contemporary design, in that they are design-led, relatively small, yet highly specialised and industrially developed. Like Kartell, Magis specialise in plastic furniture and homeware.
