mid 19th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Covered box of buff stoneware with green and translucent glazes over painting of leafy fronds, flowers and trellis in underglaze iron. Deep square box with faceted corners; flat lid with loop handle. Mould-made showing fabric impressions on interior of box and scraping marks on bottom of box and top of lid; three scalloped feet attached to flat base of box; small ridge of triangular cross-section attached near edge of underside of lid (for fitting lid to box-rather badly in actual practice); two sets of shallow channels running around upper side of lid near edge; striated loop handle attached to centre of lid. Glaze on lid covering the whole interior, and the underside inside the attached ridge - some wiping away of glaze; glaze on box covering the whole interior up to just below the mouthrim, the exterior down to the level of the base, and onto the exterior faces of the feet; slight bleeding and reddening go copper green glaze at edges. Three (or more?) spur marks on underside of lid.
