Pear-shaped bottle made of porcelain covered with a qingbai glaze; cut in eight faces from top to bottom with a gently tapering neck the upper part of which is missing and replaced in metal; the lower part of the bottle is cut in sharply and the foot, which spreads outwards somewhat is also mounted in metal. Four-pointed 'lotus panels' executed in applied pearl-beading extend part way down the neck, each covering two faces; in each is a pendant curled scroll. Below this are eight panels containing applied relief floral sprays, one to each face, framed likewise in pearl-beading and falling to a point. The ribs of beading are continued to the top of the foot, forming panels in which the curled scroll is repeated in an upright sense.
The ormolu mounts consist of an octagonal stepped pedestal foot and a protruding octagonal lip with a supporting section pierced with circular 'windows', surmounted by an octagonal dome cover.

It was sold in the Parke-Bernet Sale, New York, April 14, 1950, no. 336 as Korean, and given to the V&A by Baroness Cassel van Doorn. |
