VASE Porcelain with moulded relief decoration and purple and clear glazes Mark Kairakuen sei impressed on base Kairakuen ware JAPANESE; c.1800-1850 289-1877 The Kairakeun kiln was the official kiln of the Daimyo (provincial lord) of Kii (modern day Wakayama prefecture) who was a member of the ruling Tokugawa family. In response to the prevalent 18th and 19th century fashion for Chinese art many Kairakuen wares imitate Chinese ceramics, in this example the Fahua ware of the Ming Dynasty.(As at 2005)
Object history
Purchased from the Japanese Commissioners for the Philadelphia Exposition of 1876, accessioned in 1877. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
