This dish is decorated with a hen and her chicks amongst garden foliage. The illustration can be found in a wood-block illustrated manual, the Cao Ben Hua Shi Pu, 'Grass Poetry Manual', printed in Huizhou, Anhui province in 1621. This type of ceramic was very popular in Japan , appreciated for its spontaneity and natural charms and was often known as Ranhohen in Japanese, meaning 'things made in a haphazard fashion'.
