Place of origin

Dish with shallow rounded cavetto and flat spreading rim with foliated rim; low, thin foot to which some kiln-grit adheres. Painted inside with two deer among prunus, pine and bamboo reserved on a blue ground, and round the rim with a tree-shrew, a toad, and a bird, each on a rock among flowering plants; the outside with sketchy floral sprays, also a border with birds on the branches above the foot. On the base, in ink fired red, is the inscription: "L. Jackson// for Mr. Ward // Now (at) Ye May Fair." The inscription may be that of an English restorer of the early 19th century using a refiring technique.
