Pillow

1450-1550 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Pillow of grey stoneware, supported on a base in the shape of a reclining woman, wearing a purple and turquoise-blue robe, a yellow collar, and a high purple headdress, reclines against a cylindrical pillow, her head raised on her right hand and her left hand laid on a dog that lies by her side. Her face and hands are left in a biscuit state without colouring except for outlining of the eyes in black. The figure rests on an oblong pedestal with panelled ornament in turquoise blue and purple along the front and the remaining three sides unglazed. From behind her back rises a fungus-shaped head-rest, the upper surface of which is marbled in red and white clay and covered with a yellow glaze. Purple lustre pigment is applied to the figure in several places.
