While Italy had a good reputation for fashion in general, the Italian machine-knitwear industry was considered particularly outstanding in the late 20th century. Design houses such as Missoni were renowned for their richly coloured, densely patterned knitwear for both men and women, such as this horizontally-striped mohair and wool-blend cardigan. Although machine-knitted, this garment shows the 'handmade look' that Ottavio Missoni stated he wanted his knitwear to have.
