Dish with rounded spreading sides rising toward the rim; solid, straight foot. The rim is foliated in eight pointed lobes. Inside round a central depression is a band of eight radiating 'lotus petal' panels in moulded relief, each containing a different Buddhist emblems. The piece is heavily potted and the glaze inferior, with a greyish tone and various imperfections, including a firing fault on the outside.

Object history | From Laguna (near Manila), the Philippines. The group of objects (FE.3 to 105-1975) were all acquired by Sir John Addis during his stay in Manila as British Ambassador, ca. 1965-70, and are purportedly from excavations there. See papers published at the Manila Trade Pottery Seminiar, 1968, here noted; also Locsin, L & C, Oriental Ceramics discovered in the Philippines, Rutland & Tokyo 1968; and Addis, J. M. Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, 1967-69 London : The Society, pp. 17-36. |
