Box and Lid

1279-1368 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A shallow circular box with rounded spreading sides and flat, concave base, approximately matched by a cover with however a convex top, and fitting over the flanged lip of the box. The somewhat brittle porcelain is highly translucent and white in colour, with an orange firing-stain on the base; therein, faintly greenish glaze covers the top and extends only halfway down the sides of the box, also appearing inside the lid. The moulded reliefs are in a wiry, linear style and comprise a blooming lotus spray on the top framed by three lines, and rather calligraphic leafy scrolls round the sides of both top and bottom, with touches of combwork.
