Sauceboat, porcelain, of oval shape flattened at one end with pointed spout, the sides fluted and a small ribbed loop handle at one end, solid foot and glazed base. Painted in enamels and gold inside is the shield of arms; Freame of Gloucestershire, Argent a chevron sable, in chief a bar engrailed gules, with almost certainly, Comyn, in pretence. Painted mainly in red and gold with crossed palm leaves beneath it. Below the rim is a scrolling lotus tendril border in red and gold.

This service was probably made for the son or grandson of John Freame, the wealthy Quaker goldsmith and banker whose signs at 54 and 56 Lombard Street ("The Golden Eagle" and "The Three Crowns") later formed the arms of Barclay's bank (for David Barclay had married Priscilla Freame in 1723).
