The elephant stands with its head bowed to the left and trunk coiled. On its back is a "saddle" with a hole in it to which some further fittings, probably of metal, were formerly affixed, simple pendant trappings, and a harness which runs round under the neck and tail. The body of the elephant is uncoloured porcelain with partly moulded, partly incised details in a somewhat un-naturalistic, archaic style. It is covered with a soft lead glaze, the trappings and harness being picked out in aubergine purple, yellow, and blue enamels.
