Club-shaped vase. Porcelain with decoration painted in overglaze enamels in the famille verte palette and gilt. Round the rim is a border of key-fret in red. Round the neck are two borders of cell-diaper in green and gold, divided by a raised zone of spirals in red; above is a castellated border in red; below, one border of trefoils in yellow and quatrefoil flowers in red and green. On the body of the vase are six figures. The large central figure is that of the exorcist deity Zhong Kui who is credited with powers over malignant demons. Zhong Kui here has a bushy red beard and side whiskers and is attired in a blue cap, iron-red robes, loose green trousers and black boots. He carries a sword in his left hand. His right foot is on the back of a demon, naked to the waist and wearing only green trousers and a girdle, who kneels on all fours looking at the figure standing behind Zhong Kui. This figure is an attendant demon. He is naked to the waist, being clad only in green scarf, green girdle and pale olive-green trousers. Over his left shoulder he carries an umbrella in the form of a pair of bat's wings and in his right hand a small basket containing a bat and the peach of immortality. In front of Zhongkui is a third person clad in green scarf, girdle and blue trousers, who offers him a rice-measure. Behind is a fourth demon attired in green tunic, iron-red trousers and olive-green boots, and carrying a wine-vessel. Close behind him follows a small blue demon with girdle and mauve trousers.
