Place of origin |
With its very white porcelain body and asymmetrical design painted in a bright but soft palette of blue, red, yellow, green and black enamel, this is a classic example of Japanese Kakiemon-style porcelain. The phoenixes and the combination of pine, prunus and bamboo, the so-called 'Three Friends of Winter', were thought of in Japan as auspicious motifs, though their significance would have been lost on western owners of such wares.
