Figure of a Dutch merchant with a monkey, porcelain, painted in enamel colours and gilt. The smiling figure seated with the left leg folded across, one hand on his knee and the other (now missing) grasping a knotted kerchief; the monkey clambers on his leg. Face and hair are painted in red and black, the locks falling to the shoulders under a red topee. He wears a long, gilt-buttoned coat with leaf pattern in brownish-red, purple, two shades of green and black over a shirt with blue cuffs, green trousers and purple leggings. The plinth has a gilt-framed Imari-style panel in relief with two birds on a pomegranate branch by a blue rock, picked out in red, green and gold.
