Dish

1710-1725 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Dish of porcelain. Saucer-shaped, with moulded ribs in the form of a large pointed star creating eight semi-circular panels round the foliated rim. It is painted in the Imari style with underglaze blue, red enamel and gilt predominating and two shades of green, yellow and manganese-purple. In the centre is a colourful pomegranate within a lotus-scroll border in white on red, and in the panels are 'squirrel-and-vine' designs, with a diapered rim. On the underside are panels of prunus. The 'squirrel' is in fact the oriental tree rat.
