Vase

1975-1979 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Vase with rounded shoulders tapering gently to straight foot, the base undercut slightly, the neck short and everting. Glazed all over, except on the footring on which it was fired. Painted over the glaze on one side only, with a scene of a group of "young pioneers" wearing red neckerchiefs, watching one of their number, a girl, demonstrating martial arts with an imitation sword. The watching children are accompanied by an elderly peasant man in traditional dress, bearing another wushu (martial arts) sword across one knee. Other children carry model weapons, and the ideologically correct scene is emphasised by two very young children astride a canon (defence of the motherland) and blossoming trees (hope, youth, burgeoning young state). Swallows (harbingers of spring) hover around. The mouthrim is gilt.
