This high quality ivory carving of children and an elephant would have greatly appealed to western taste. It was bought as part of a group of carvings from a London dealer in 1883 for the considerable sum of £300. It reflects the interest of this museum in acquiring contemporary Japanese artefacts at that time.
Stained ivory carving of children and an elephant, with bronze stand.
