Hanging, embroidery on cream silk background. The principal motif, forming a central vertical axis, is a three-tiered pillar, supported on three frogs and flanked by birds, animals, horns of plenty, vines, fruit and flowers.
First tier: A snake writhing round the pillar, which is flanked by two white cranes and horns of plenty. The tier topped with pomegranates and apples.
Second tier: The pillar flanked by horns of plenty bearing pomegranates and apples, the horns also wreathed in vines and bunches of grapes. On the right horn a pheasant, on the left a squirrel eating fruit. The tier topped with pineapples.
Third tier: The pillar flanked by horns of plenty wreathed in vines and bunches of grapes. On the right horn a squirrel eating fruit, on the left a cock. The pillar crossed by a ribboned swag, and topped by pomegranates, apples and ears of wheat.
Principally satin stitch (long and short stitch), but with highlights in split stitch, oriental couching (laid stitch), twisted couching and Peking knot.
The embroidery technique is entirely Chinese, but the design showing signs of Indian influence, possibly also the influence of European ceramic motifs. For the export market.
