In 1726, the Matsuya Kimono Store opened in Osaka’s Shinsaibashisuji area, just around the corner from the lively Dōtonbori theatre district. Along with the Echigoya and Shirokiya Kimono Stores in Edo (Tokyo), the business grew into one of the biggest kimono outlets in Japan.
