Box for letters (fubako), part of a wedding trousseau, of rectangular form and with rounded corners, with an overhanging lid that has scalloped edges in the middle of the base on each side to accomodate a silver metal fitting (for a cord, now missing), wood covered in gold lacquer and decorated with a mon(family crest) of six barrels; the box is decorated on the lid and base in such a way that the design on each matches up, with poem cards tied to branches of cherry and plum blossoms, together with two different scatterd mon, one of a stylised ginkgo flower and the other with barrels, the same as on the silver metal fittings, in gold hiramaki-e (low sprinkled picture) and takamaki-e (high sprinkled picture), inlaid with silver and gold foil on a nashi-ji (pear skin ground) lacquer; the interior and underside of the box is of nashi-ji.
