Box and lid for a mirror, of circular form and with a domed lid, wood covered in silver lacquer, the lid exterior, sides and base sides with rocks, pine trees, blossoming plum trees and Tokugawa mon (family crests) on a ground of imitation wood grain (mokume) in gold and silver hiramaki-e (metal powder sprinkled on to a lacquer design befoire it has hardened so that it is in low relief) and takamaki-e (maki-e in which parts of the design can be raised by clay or charcoal powder) lacquer, with gold and silver kirikane (metal foil cut to various shapes and individually set into lacquer, often as a mosaic). The inside of the lid with rocks, pine trees, bamboo and a pair of cranes in similar techniques but on nashiji lacquer (ground of gold flakes of irregular size and shape sprinkled on to resemble pear skin); the interior and underside of the base is in nashiji lacquer.
