Small, lidded box in the form of a butterfly with outstretched wings, with a design of the Kinkaku-ji (Golden temple), Kyoto, in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e lacquer with kirikane on a black lacquer ground; the sides decorated with autumn plants growing round the box. Inside the box is a removeable tray decorated with a landscape and, in the foreground, is a rustic dwelling and a pipe from which spouts water in gold hiramaki-e with kirikane lacquer on a gold on black lacquer ground within a plain border of gold lacquer. The underside of the lid is decorated with butterflies and moths in gold and silver hiramaki-elacquer on a nashi-ji lacquer ground; the interior and underside of the boix are in nashi-ji lacquer.
