Box and lid of rectangular form, with rounded corners and scalloped indentations on both long sides of the lid, wood covered in crushed eggshell on black lacquer, with eight butterflies and moths concentrated in two opposite corners in gold, red and black hiramaki-e (metal powder sprinkled on to a lacquer design before it has hardened so that it is in low relief) lacquer, with gold lacquer edging to the thin border round the lid; the interior and base in gold nashiji(ground of gold flakes of irregular size and shape sprinkled on to resemble pear skin). The underside of the box is inscribed Satô <i>seizô</i> in gold <i>hiramaki-e</i> lacquer.
