Physical description

Panel; probably a table frontal. ( upper front lap missing ?) Red silk satin ( satin 4), embroidered in coloured silks and gold thread in satin stitch, pekin knots and couched work. Embroideries feature a composition of vases in connection with literary and artistic paraphernalia, known as bagu (Hundred Antiques). In the centre a recumbent ox carries the sacred bronze mirror of the Daoists on its back mounted upon a cloud pedestal. At the sides are ranged vases containing fruit, flowers and peacocks' feathers, incense-burners, piles of books, barrel-shaped vases and trays filled with the tools of the calligrapher and artist, and scrolls of painting, open and rolled up, together with other examples of artistic handiwork. Fragment of a woven band in different shades of blue at the border along the bottom.
