Purse, the upper part of the front of plain purple silk satin, the lower part of silk embroidery (tent stitch); the back is of green silk damask; silk cords for tying.

The embroidered pattern shows a selection of objects illustrating the elegant accomplishments of a Chinese gentleman (a pile of books with a pair of scrolls for calligraphy or painting, a checker-broad, a swastika-marked vase with implements for burning incense etc., within a key-fret pattern. In the centre is one of the Eight-trigrams, it consists of three sets of broken lines and represents Earth. In colours on a dark green-ground, the key-fret is in white, outlined with dark blue. The pattern of the silk damask is of a floral character. Lined with red silk satin.
